WANNABE MAGAZINE: You’re young but very talented fashion illustrator and designer and you made a lot amazing illustrations by now. When did you start drawing and when did you realize that you want to do illustrations and design?
Hayden Williams: I started drawing at the age of 3. I am self taught in illustration, which is something i am proud of. I did it because i just genuinely enjoyed it and it came very naturally to me. I had no clue back then that it would eventually become a career i would pursue. As i got older, it naturally progressed into fashion illustration and design.
Your illustrations are showing women’s femininity, sophistication and stylishness. They’re are just perfect! How do you get ideas and inspiration for your illustrations?
I love looking at vintage Vogue editorials or fashion from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. Particularly the late 50’s and early 60’s. The timelessness and classic silhouettes inspire me to sketch. I love all things glamorous and elegant and i feel like those eras were the most timeless for women. I also get inspiration from Pop Culture. Sometimes i will sketch a musician/pop star that i admire or someone well known in Pop Culture, but only if i am inspired to. i pretty much always sketch celebrities wearing my own designs.
What was your first illustration?
It was probably a Disney character! As a child, i grew up watching Disney movies and they were pretty much my first source of inspiration! I would sit and draw the animated female characters over and over.
We would like to know where did you study fashion design and what experiences did you get during studying?
Hayden Williams: I studied fashion design at Barking college and then went on to study Fashion Product Innovation at Ravensbourne university (both in London). Both courses basically taught me the basics of sewing, design, pattern cutting, constructing etc. Even though i mainly design via illustration and am self taught in that area, i wanted to be able to say that i actually studied design before i could call myself a designer.
How long have you been interested in fashion?
I think subconsciously, fashion has alway been there! I just hadn’t tapped into it fully yet until i got older. I realised that what i was doing could translate to fashion design. When i had that realisation, i knew i had to go and study it.
Who is your favorite fashion designer?
I don’t have one particular favourite but i love vintage Dior, vintage Givenchy (both during the 50’s) Jason Wu & Elie Saab to name a few. I appreciate the designers that design to flatter a woman’s body. It is something i can relate to. As a male designer, i want to design clothing that makes women look and feel amazing.
What are your next career plans?
I want to continue doing what i love, which is merging my passion of illustration and designing, but i also want to collaborate with some amazing brands, have my own high end fashion label in the future and dress a lot of beautiful women. I have many goals and i am determined to achieve them all. It’s all about being focused on those goals and being consistent also.
